Forgive me if I’m slow to come around to the idea that the Astros have the catching problem solved. J.R. Towles is 26 this year, so if he’s going to have a real season, it will be this year or next. It’s nice to see him get a few hits to start spring training, but he has 39 home runs and 123 walks in 1,442 minor-league at-bats. Seems like the maximum output there between him and Jason Castro is survival level, something like functional defense and adequate on-base percentage with very little power.
