The No. 2 starter, Wandy Rodriguez, had fun in Corpus Christi Thursday, striking out 11 and walking none in 6 innings. It would be nice to see him put up that line a few times in the regular season.
This is a guy who ought to have a better record than he has had. Let’s look at some numbers:
— Strikeout rate: It’s gone up every year, from 5.6 to 6.5 to 7.8 to 8.6 every 9 innings.
— Walk rate: 3.7, 4.2, 3.1, 2.9. More than acceptable.
— Home run rate: He got it under 1 per 9 IP last year.
What a pitcher can do is strike guys out, not walk them, and keep the ball in the park. Rodriguez does all those things. Most of the time, those numbers translate to something better than a 9-7 won-lost record.
