Chronicle columnist Richard Justice would like Drayton McLane to talk publicly about his finances. I don’t see how it’s in anyone’s best interest for McLane to do that, except maybe the Cardinals, Cubs and Brewers.
Back when he was losing money and needed public cash for a new stadium, he had no problem talking about how Houston had to pony up to keep its baseball team.
There’s a big difference between opening the books to keep the team from moving and opening the books to apprise the public of the team’s competitive situation, don’t you think?
Besides, if McLane held a news conference to detail the Astros’ finances, would anyone believe him?
