I should have known better than to turn off the TV with the Astros leading 3-0 going to the top of the 9th inning Monday night. I checked back in briefly and discovered that Jose Valverde had picked up the win by blowing the save.
That’s one of your stupid rules, isn’t it? Your closer comes in leading by 3, gives up 3 runs, and picks up a win for his trouble. The rule should call for the victory to go back to the previous pitcher, or in this case, a pitcher chosen by the official scorer. That would be Wandy Rodriguez, who pitched 7.1 innings and gave up … nothing (3 hits, no walks, 6 strikeouts). Doug Brocail finished the eighth for him after he gave up a hit, then Valverde came in to pick up the win, with some help from Miguel Tejada’s 9th-inning home run.
I didn’t see much of Tuesday night’s game. Shawn Chacon was surprisingly decent, but the Astros scored only 3 in their loss. Lots of guys are not hitting: Pence (although he had a triple Tuesday), Mark Loretta, Ty Wigginton.
