Games 3 and 4: A win and a loss
I don’t know how many good pitching performances the Astros are going to get this year, but I’m guessing it’s not so many they can afford to waste one. So they did on Thursday, when Shawn Chacon went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs.
Wednesday’s game was looking about as much like a loss as a game can look — down a run with two outs in the ninth and the bases empty and facing Trevor Hoffman. Walk (Cruz), single (Bourn), single (Pence), home run (Berkman).
Anyway, 12 runs in 4 games in San Diego is not awful, but when nine of the runs come in one game, that’s not so good. Imposssible to win with 0 runs. Difficult to win with 1. Fairly easy to win with 9. Difficult to win with 2. That’s how you go 1-3.
